Lots of cars had that, my ‘80s Lincoln has it there too. Not sure why, but it’s still more convenient than not having one at all.

that’s a good point. My Mitsubishi has a cable release for the trunk. The lever is down by the driver’s seat like a Honda, but it’s stretched out. and the pot metal lever is bent, so the only way to open my trunk is to use a broken broom handle through the Audi style ski hole(the seat doesn’t fold) and manually move the hook over a inch to release the trunk lock. So basically I don’t have a trunk.
